UTU appoints committee to ponder merger proposals

United Transportation Union (UTU) officials are getting ready to pursue another merger. The union recently appointed a merger oversight committee to review merger proposals with other labor unions.

“Carriers have been merging for decades, and the balance of power between labor and the carriers has been affected,” said UTU International President Paul Thompson in a prepared statement.

The committee comprises Thompson, Assistant President Rick Marceau, and General Secretary and Treasurer Dan Johnson.

One labor organization UTU officials won’t consider merging with is the Teamsters Rail Conference, which includes long-time rival — and, at one time, proposed merger partner — the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, and the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes, Thompson said.
