The Transport Workers Union (TWU) yesterday appointed John Samuelsen the labor organization's 10th international president after incumbent president Harry Lombardo's announced his immediate retirement.

Samuelsen currently serves as president of TWU Local 100 in New York City, the union's largest local affiliate.

Samuelsen joined TWU in 1993 after landing a job as a track worker for MTA New York City Transit. In December 2009, he was elected president of Local 100 and was re-elected to the position in 2012 and 2015.

He'll continue his role as Local 100 president for the short term to oversee implementation of a recently negotiated agreement for 38,000 members at NYCT, MTA Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Operating Authority and MTA Bus Co., according to a union press release.
