The Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet) and the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 757 late last week reached a tentative agreement on a new labor contract.

The pact covers terms for the period between December 2016 and November 2019. The agreement includes a 3 percent wage increase retroactive to December 2016 and an additional 3.25 percent increase in December 2017.

The pact also calls for a 3.25 percent wage increase in December 2018. The tentative agreement came after eight negotiation sessions, four mediation sessions and numerous offline discussions, TriMet officials said in a press release.

The contract, which still must be ratified by TriMet's board and ATU membership, would cover about 85 percent of the transit agency's 3,000-employee workforce, including rail operators, light-rail supervisors and maintenance workers.

"What we have achieved through this process is not only good for TriMet's team of union-represented employees, it's good for our riders and stakeholders, as it underscores our commitment to providing safe, reliable transit throughout the Portland region," said TriMet General Manager Neil McFarlane.
