Yesterday, the United Transportation Union elected Richard Marceau assistant president to succeed Paul Thompson. Last month, Thompson was named international president to succeed Byron Boyd Jr., who retired after pleading guilty to a federal racketeering charge.

Marceau has served as international vice president since 1995. He previously served as associate general chairperson for several committees, and local chairperson and vice local chairperson for various trades.

In 1967, Marceau began his railroad career as a train and engine-service worker for Northern Pacific Railway, which is now part of Burlington Northern Santa Fe. He later was promoted to conductor and engineer.

UTU also appointed Alternate VP-West John Babler international VP, effective June 1, to succeed Marceau.

In other elections, Donald Anderson was named alternate Canadian legislative representative to succeed the late Don Tennant; Richard Deiser, alternate VP-bus department, to succeed Carol Scarsella, who resigned; Jacques Gagne, a Canadian Board of Appeals member to succeed to Barry McLafferty, who also resigned; Roland Hackl, a board member to succeed Craig Good; and International VP Carl Vahldick, a board member.

Meanwhile, UTU's board adopted a new policy requiring any international officer indicted for a felony to take an immediate leave of absence until charges are resolved.
