Unifor National Council 4000 and Local 100 members employed by VIA Rail Canada Inc. have ratified new collective-bargaining agreements that provide a wage increase and work flexibility.
The contract calls for an average wage increase of 3.83% over three years for nearly 2,400 VIA Rail employees — 5.5% in 2022, 3.5% in 2023 and 2.5% in 2024. The increases will be retroactive to Jan. 1, 2022, and remain in effect through the end of 2024.
Employees "experienced unprecedented hardships over the past two years," VIA Rail officials said in a press release. The agreement allows employees to catch up post-pandemic as union members saw wage increases of 0% in 2020 and 2% in 2021, VIA officials said.
The agreement also includes revisions to work rules and collaboration diversity and inclusion issues, they said.
"We are delighted with the ratification of these mutually beneficial agreements which will provide stability for the next three years, as well as increased flexibility to actively pursue the recovery of our services and advance VIA Rail’s important modernization projects," said Chief Employee Experience Officer Martine Rivard.
