Rail News: Labor
Last week, the American Arbitration Association certified national division president and secretary-treasurer election results for the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division (BMWED) of the Teamsters Rail Conference. About 79 percent of BMWED’s 606 local lodges cast ballots, which totaled 23,358 votes.
A 64.9 percent majority of voters re-elected Freddie Simpson national division president. He defeated Larry Goad, Jim Goble and Jim Knight.
Meanwhile, a 55.7 percent majority of voters re-elected Perry Geller Sr. national division secretary-treasurer. He defeated Paul Swanson and Dana Booth.
In September 2004, union members elected both officers to their current posts. Former Secretary-Treasurer Simpson and Executive Board Chairman Geller began serving as acting president and secretary-treasurer, respectively, in April 2004 after former President Mac Fleming retired following an extended medical leave.
