Utah Railway engineers, conductors ratify BLET contract

Utah Railway Co. workers recently ratified a five-year contract with the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) division of the Teamsters Rail Conference.

The contract provides a 15 percent general wage increase through 2010 and back pay retroactive to Jan. 1. Additional fringe benefits could boost workers’ pay about 18 percent. The pact also preserves a minimum crew consist agreement, which mandates that at least one locomotive engineer and one conductor be placed on remote-control jobs.

The BLET organized the short line’s trainmen in February 2003. A Genesee & Wyoming Inc. subsidiary, the 276-mile Utah Railway serves as a switching railroad for BNSF Railway Co. in Salt Lake City, Provo and Ogden, Utah.
