Class Is expand workforce more than 3 percent in 2005, STB says

In December, the Class Is operating in the United States employed 164,877 people, a 3.6 percent increase compared with December 2004, according to the Surface Transportation Board’s monthly railroad employment report. The employment total rose 0.3 percent compared with November 2005.
At year end, Class I executives, officials and staff assistants totaled 9,540, a 6.4 percent increase compared with December 2004. The large roads also employed more maintenance-of-way and structures workers (up 4.7 percent to 34,337), train and engine-service workers (up 4.2 percent to 69,658), and equipment and stores maintenance workers (up 2.5 percent to 30,310) on a year-over-year basis.
