A majority of 70 Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway Ltd. (MMA) workers recently voted in favor of joining the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) — the union’s second small road organizing victory in 2006. The workers previously were unrepresented. In January, Panhandle Northern Railroad workers joined the BLET.
About six months ago, BLET officials approached MMA workers to discuss the benefits of union representation.
“We will now begin the process of negotiating the first-ever collective bargaining agreement for our newest members,” said BLET National President Don Hahs in a prepared statement.
The 750-mile MMA operates lines in Maine, Vermont, Quebec and New Brunswick. The regional interchanges with Canadian National and Canadian Pacific railways, and seven other railroads.
