The United Transportation Union (UTU) is teaming up with a larger labor union ally to share ideas on public policy issues and globalization. The 125,000-member UTU has forged a strategic alliance with the 850,000-member United Steelworkers to address a range of common North American transportation issues.

The unions will coordinate organizing and legislative activities, and share knowledge and resources.

“The UTU has worked to improve the working conditions of rail and bus workers for more than 120 years,” said UTU International President Paul Thompson in a prepared statement. “Years ago, UTU’s principal employers were national in scope; however, today its real counterparts are global companies, doing business in the United States and abroad.”

The UTU represents railroad, bus and mass transit workers in the United States and Canada; the USW represents transportation, steel, aluminum, can, mining, manufacturing and chemical industry workers in both countries.
