On July 1, a majority of VAE Nortrak North America Inc. employees in Birmingham, Ala., voted to be represented by the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division (BMWED) of the Teamsters Rail Conference. Last month, Nortrak workers in Cheyenne, Wyo., ratified their first-ever bargaining agreement and joined the union, which represents about 38,000 U.S. rail workers.

In May, BMWED officials petitioned the National Labor Relations Board for an election at the Birmingham plant. More than 90 percent of the plant’s workers voted.

Nortrak supplies track and various railway components to North American freight and passenger railroads.
