On Aug. 1, Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers announced St. Lawrence & Atlantic Railroad Co.'s (SL&A) train and engine-service workers chose the union as their collective bargaining representative by a 22-1 vote over United Transportation Union, according to National Mediation Board-certified election results.

Owned and operated by Genesee & Wyoming Inc., the 260-mile SL&A operates a line between Portland, Maine, and Ste. Rosalie, Quebec., and interchanges with Canadian National Railway Co. The short line moves intermodal traffic and various commodities, including lumber, pulp, paper, industrial products, steel, grain and agricultural products.

During the past year, BLE has organized four other regionals or short lines: Utah Railway Co.; Iowa, Chicago & Eastern Railroad Corp.; Indiana Southern Railroad Inc.; and The Texas Mexican Railway Co.
