Ninety percent of Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) divisions representing locomotive engineers on Union Pacific Railroad have ratified a "momentous" agreement designed to enhance their quality of life through more predictable work schedules.
The agreement provides locomotive engineers in unassigned service scheduled rest days and predictable work schedules — being available for 11 days followed by four days off — along with other work-rest models, BLET officials said in a press release.
The new work-rest schedules are expected to be implemented within the next year, they said.
"We will continue to negotiate meaningful improvements to the working conditions for the members we represent," BLET's general chairmen said in the release.
In May, UP and BLET announced the agreement, which the railroad said will help it better manage staffing levels to support more consistent and reliable service.
