BMWED to represent continuous-welded rail supplier's workers

Last week, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) certified election results at Ribbon Weld L.L.C., enabling the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division (BMWED) of the Teamsters Rail Conference to represent the Springfield, Mo., supplier’s production and maintenance workers.

In early August, BMWED officials petitioned the NLRB for an election after obtaining the required number of authorization cards. A majority of workers at Ribbon Weld — which supplies continuous-welded rail to U.S. Class Is, short lines and commuter railroads — voted in favor of BMWED representation.

“We … welcome these new members to BMWED and look forward to a productive relationship with management,” said BMWED President Freddie Simpson in a prepared statement.

The union represents about 38,000 U.S. rail workers who build and maintain track, bridges and buildings.
