Citing health reasons, Mac Fleming recently retired as president of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes (BMWE), ending his more than 30-year career with the union.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank the membership for allowing me the privilege to serve as president of our great union over the past 14 years," Fleming said in a prepared statement.

In July, Fleming took a leave of absence from BMWE for medical reasons, but expected to return by 2003's end. Secretary-Treasurer Freddie Simpson was named acting president and Executive Board Chairman Perry Geller, acting secretary-treasurer. Simpson will continue to serve as acting president until the union names Fleming's successor.

"Brother Fleming will be missed for the time and effort he put forth in
our battles to improve our members' lives," said Simpson.
