Rail News: Labor
Yesterday, Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes (BMWE) members elected Freddie Simpson president and Perry Geller Sr., secretary-treasurer, at the union's international association meeting in Alburquerque, N.M.
Former Secretary-Treasurer Simpson and Executive Board Chairman Geller had been serving as acting president and secretary-treasurer, respectively, since April, when former President Mac Fleming retired following an extended medical leave.
"I am gratified to be officially elected as your president, and look forward
to moving our organization forward together with the membership and the rest of the officers and staff," said Simpson in a prepared statement.
Last month, BMWE officials settled a lawsuit with the U.S. Department of Labor by agreeing to re-run elections for president and secretary-treasurer. Department officials alleged certain campaign improprieties were committed by three officers who won elections at the union's July 2002 convention in Las Vegas. BMWE might also have to re-run an election for Canadian vice president.
