BNSF, SMART-TD reach tentative pact on PEB issues, work-life benefits

BNSF Railway Co. and the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers, Transportation Division (SMART-TD) have reached a tentative system-wide agreement covering the Class I's ground service employees.

The pact follows up on the mandatory local bargaining items from last year’s Presidential Emergency Board (PEB) and addresses other issues, BNSF officials said in a press release.

The agreement calls for more predictable scheduling, with rest days available to all pool and extra board employees. It also would enable all ground service employees to take paid sick days, with many additional quality of work/life changes.

The enhancements will benefit current employees, as well as aid in recruitment and retention efforts, company officials said.

The tentative agreement — which follows months of negotiations — requires ratification by SMART-TD members.
