Unifor this week announced it has begun negotiations with CN for a new labor agreement.

The union represents about 3,600 workers at Local 100 and Council 4000, who work at CN terminals in Canada and the Class I's headquarters in Montreal. That group of workers includes mechanics, crane operators, machinists, electricians, and clerical, administrative and customer support professionals, Unifor officials said in a press release.

The current collective agreement expires Dec. 31.

Both sides have exchanged proposals and agreed to continue negotiations through Dec. 31, Unifor officials said. The union's proposals include wage hikes, benefits enhancements and address the "ongoing issue of contracting out unionized work," they said.

"The fact is that, during a time of record inflation, CN is reporting record quarterly earnings," said Unifor National President Lana Payne. "Without our members at the helm, this company wouldn't have been able to get even close to that, and they deserve to be compensated fairly and treated with respect."
