Rail News: Labor
The Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division (BMWED) strike against Canadian National Railway Co. lasted one day.
Today, CN announced it reached an agreement with the Teamsters Rail Conference union, which represents about 250 maintenance-of-way workers, to resume contract talks. The BMWED also agreed to end the strike at the former Grand Trunk Western, Detroit Toledo & Ironton, and Detroit Toledo & Shore Line properties.
The Class I and union will ask a federal court to stay further legal proceedings, and invited the National Mediation Board to participate in upcoming negotiations.
The BMWED issued the strike because contract talks have been stalled since March and CN would not bargain in good faith, union officials claim. The parties differed on seniority and outsourcing issues. CN officials considered the strike an illegal action.
