Rail News: Labor
Officials at Transportation-Communications International Union's Brotherhood of Railway Carmen Division (BRC) recently completed negotiations with National Carriers' Conference Committee (NCCC) representatives regarding members' monthly health and welfare cost-sharing contribution.
Beginning July 1, members will pay $91.32 per month, which is less than the cost-sharing amount stipulated in a January 2003 arbitrated agreement and below $100, as members had requested, said BRC General President Richard Johnson in a prepared statement. Members currently pay $79.74 per month.
Carriers' new monthly payment rate for health benefits (excluding life, vision and dental insurance, and on-duty injury medical coverage) will be $888.87 compared with $832.50 during the current contract year.
"For the past several months, we have engaged the NCCC in detailed and complex negotiations in order to arrive at the $91.32 amount," said Johnson. "For example, we compared the cost increase to the plan for our members versus the members of unions which have not yet settled their contracts, and therefore have not adopted any cost-shaving provisions."
On July 1, BRC members also will begin receiving a 3.25 percent wage increase per a national NCCC contract.
