Long-time United Transportation Union (UTU) international vice president and railroader Delmar Deering died Saturday in Mount Horeb, Wis., according to the union. He was 91.
A member of Local 312 in Madison, Wis., Deering began his railroading career in 1942 as a fireman at the Chicago & North Western Railroad (C&NW). He was promoted to engineer in 1946.
A year earlier, he joined UTU predecessor the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen, and served as an organizer, chairperson, recording and financial secretary, Grand Lodge field representative and general organizer during the next decade. In 1955, Deering was elected general chairperson for the C&NW.
In 1963, he was elected vice president of the union. Deering retained that position when the UTU was formed in 1969 and until he retired Jan. 1, 1981.
An avid sports fan, he helped found the Madison East High Booster Club, served as president of the Minnesota Vikings Booster Club, and was a member of the Zor Shriners, the Elks and the East Side Business Men’s Association in Madison.
Preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn, in March, Deering is survived by a son and daughter, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The family asks that memorials be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 575 Zor Shrine Place, Madison, WI 53719.
