Yesterday, former United Transportation Union Vice President James Harden Jr. died in Fitzgerald, Ga. He was 78.
A member of Local 1790, Harden began his railroading career in 1947 as a brakeman for the former Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. In 1978, he was elected general chairperson of the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad grievance committee after serving in various local union positions. In 1979, Harden was elected UTU alternate vice president.
He became vice president in 1982, was re-elected to the post in 1983 and 1987, and retired in 1992.
Harden is survived by his wife Mary, two sons, five grandchildren and one great grandchild.
The family requests that memorials be sent to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 9, Fitzgerald, GA 31750.
