Former Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers International Vice President Carl McGuire died Feb. 29 in Ashland, Ky., after a long illness. He was 78.

In 1943, McGuire began his railroad career as a fireman for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway (C&O). He was promoted to locomotive engineer in 1951.

McGuire joined the union — now the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen division of the Teamsters Rail Conference — in 1962, later serving as local chairman and legislative representative. In 1969, he became vice chairman of C&O's general committee, then later that year joined the general chairman's office, where he served for 12 years.

In 1976, McGuire was elected as third alternate international VP. In 1979, he was named international VP following James Birrell's retirement. After BLE's advisory board was reduced by a membership vote in 1981 and McGuire lost his position, he was elected second alternate international VP.

In 1984, he was named international VP again after Charles Moore retired. McGuire served in that capacity until his own 1986 retirement.

McGuire is survived by his wife, Melba, a stepson, two brothers and one sister. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Hospice Care Center, 2330 Pollard Road, Ashland KY 41101.
