As part of an aggressive hiring campaign, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority on April 15 will increase its sign-on bonus to $7,500 for people applying for eligible positions throughout the agency.
The list of positions eligible for the sign-on bonus has been expanded to include rail repairers, track laborers, streetcar and subway train operators, service technicians, fuelers and bus operators, MBTA officials said in a press release.
Previously, the MBTA's recruitment efforts included a $4,500 sign-on bonus only for bus operators.
As a tight labor market impacts staffing at transit agencies across the country, the MBTA has streamlined and fast-tracked its hiring process through digitization, improving hiring cycle times and doubling the size of its human resources recruiting team, agency officials said.
Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey requested $20 million in the state's March supplemental budget for new resources to enable the MBTA to better recruit and retain employees, they added.
