The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) earlier this week reached an agreement with its labor unions on family benefits for transportation workers who died of COVID-19.
The benefits include a payment of $500,000 from the MTA to the surviving family of any worker who lost their life as a result of COVID-19. The agency will also provide health insurance to the spouse and dependents of the worker for three years.
The agreement is subject to board ratification at an April 22 meeting.
Included in the agreement are: Transport Workers Union Local 100; the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers; and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 808.
Meanwhile, the MTA has partnered with Northwell Health-GoHealth Urgent Care to provide prioritized COVID-19 testing to symptomatic frontline MTA workers in New York City.
Under the partnership, the urgent care provider could test up to 50 workers per day, or 350 per week, at no cost to the employee, MTA officials said in a press release.
Starting tomorrow, workers will be able to begin arranging appointments for the diagnostic tests.
