Mediation board releases Metro-North union coalition from mediation

On Nov. 7, the National Mediation Board released a MTA Metro-North Railroad union coalition from mediation.

Comprising several labor unions, the Metro-North Labor Coalition has been working with agency officials to negotiate a new contract. However, negotiations have stalled, according to the unions. Now, coalition members might issue a strike on Dec. 7 unless Metro-North officials or governors of New York and Connecticut request a Presidential Emergency Board, the union said.

Many workers haven’t had a wage increase or new labor agreement in almost five years, according to coalition member the Transportation Communications Union (TCU).

The Metro-North Labor Coalition — which represents about 3,500 Metro-North workers — comprises the TCU, International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Firemen and Oilers of SEIU, Teamsters Rail Conference, Transport Workers Union and Sheet Metal Workers International Association.
