The National Carriers Conference Committee announced yesterday that members of the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers’ Mechanical and Engineering Department (SMART-MD) recently voted to ratify a national collective bargaining agreement with the NCCC.

The contract covers freight-rail employees through Dec. 31, 2029. This is the fifth national labor agreement ratified recently, after the National Conference of Firemen & Oilers, Transportation Communications Union, Brotherhood of Railway Carmen and American Train Dispatchers Association members all approved their contracts in recent weeks,  NCCC officials said in a press release.

The contract provides wage increases of 18.8% over five years, enhancements to health and welfare benefits with no increase to employee contribution rates, and access to more paid vacation time for employees earlier in their careers.

“We’re grateful for SMART-MD’s collaboration in achieving this important milestone, which positions the industry to meet future challenges with a strong, supported workforce,” said Jeff Rodgers, chairman of the National Railway Labor Conference and the NCCC.
