A majority of South Kansas and Oklahoma Railroad Co. maintenance-of-way (MOW) workers voted in favor of being represented by the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division (BMWED) of the Teamsters Rail Conference, according to election results certified by the National Mediation Board on Feb. 3. The short line’s workers previously were unrepresented.

In December, the BMWED — which represents about 35,000 MOW workers at U.S. railroads — petitioned the board to conduct a representation election at the 404-mile short line. Eighteen of 27 eligible voters favored the petition to join the union.

Owned by The Watco Cos. Inc., the South Kansas and Oklahoma moves more than 42,000 carloads per year.
