TWU, UTU propose simultaneous strike at SEPTA

The Transport Workers Union (TWU) Local 234 recently announced plans to launch a strike at Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority at the end of the month. Now, another union intends to do the same.

United Transportation Union (UTU) Local 1594, Suburban Transit Division, Victory District proposes to strike the authority on Oct. 31. The union — whose contract expired April 1 — represents about 320 trolley and bus operators.

The contracts for TWU Local 234’s City Transit and Suburban divisions, which represent about 4,950 SEPTA employees, expired between March 15 and April 16.

If both unions strike, SEPTA likely would only operate its regional rail lines, authority officials said in a prepared statement.
