U.S. Class I headcount rose slightly in September, STB says

The U.S. Class Is continued to boost their headcount last month. As of mid-September, they employed a total of 160,240 people, up about 0.1 percent from August’s level and 4 percent from September 2010’s count, according to Surface Transportation Board (STB) data released yesterday.

On a month-over-month basis, only two employment categories registered declines: executives/officials/staff assistants, down 0.3 percent to 9,335, and maintenance-of-way and structures, down 0.1 percent to 36,558. Professional and administrative staff remained fairly flat at 13,884, while the number of maintenance of equipment and stores workers rose 0.5 percent to 29,365; number of transportation (other than train and engine) workers increased 0.2 percent to 6,711; and number of transportation (T&E) workers inched up 0.1 percent to 64,387.

On a year-over-year basis, all six categories registered gains: transportation (T&E), 4.8 percent; maintenance-of-way and structures, 4.5 percent; maintenance of equipment and stores, 4.1 percent; executives/officials/staff assistants, 2.8 percent; transportation (other than T&E), 1.7 percent; and professional and administrative staff, 0.9 percent.
