The U.S. Class I workforce remained relatively flat in November compared with October’s level, but continued to expand on a year-over-year basis. As of mid-November, the Class Is employed 160,119 people, down less than 0.1 percent from October’s mark and up 3.3 percent from November 2010’s level, according to Surface Transportation Board (STB) data.

On a month-over-month basis, only two workforce segments posted declines:  the maintenance-of-way and structures staff, which shrank 0.7 percent to 36,374, and professional and administrative staff, which decreased 0.6 percent to 13,824. The number of executives, officials and staff assistants climbed 0.5 percent to 9,398; number of maintenance of equipment and stores workers increased 0.2 percent to 29,623; number of transportation (train and engine) employees rose 0.2 percent to 64,165; and number of transportation (other than T&E) workers inched up 0.1 percent to 6,735.

On a year-over-year basis, professional and administrative staff shrank 0.2 percent. All other categories posted gains: maintenance of equipment and stores, 4.3 percent; transportation (other than T&E), 3.8 percent; maintenance-of-way and structures, 3.4 percent; executives, officials and staff assistants, 2.7 percent; and transportation (train and engine), 1.1 percent.
