After registering a small gain in August, the U.S. Class I workforce shrunk a tad in September.
As of mid-September, the large roads employed a total of 166,068 people, a 0.5 percent decline compared with mid-August's level, according to Surface Transportation Board data. The workforce also shrunk 1.2 percent on a year-over-year basis.
The only employment group that posted a gain — albeit a small one — from August to September was the maintenance of equipment and stores workforce, which increased 0.03 percent to 30,352. The segment also grew 0.9 percent year over year.
The transportation (train and engine) workforce totaling 69,230 decreased 0.8 percent compared with mid-August's level and 3 percent compared with September 2006's count. Transportation (other than T&E) employees numbered 6,962, or 0.6 percent fewer than in mid-August and 4.4 percent fewer than in September 2006.
In addition, the maintenance-of-way and structures workforce totaled 35,585, representing a 0.4 percent decline compared with the previous month's level and 0.3 percent compared with September 2006's total.
Professional and administrative staff totaling 13,782 declined 0.5 percent compared with mid-August's level, but increased 0.7 percent year over year. Likewise, executives, officials and staff assistants numbering 10,157 decreased 0.4 percent from mid-August's level but swelled 1.3 percent from September 2006's count.
