Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) has an ally in her quest for the White House: the largest rail labor union.

Yesterday, the United Transportation Union (UTU) endorsed Clinton for President, becoming the first U.S. labor union to back her candidacy, according to the UTU.

“The UTU has a long history of picking winners early,” said UTU International President Paul Thompson in a prepared statement. “Hillary will be a president that America’s working families can count on. Time and again, as a United States senator, she has stood with us.”

UTU officials will encourage the union’s 125,000 active and retired members to register to vote and cast ballots for Clinton in next year's elections.

“We need a president with the strength and experience to stand up for America’s workers and their retirement security — Hillary Clinton is that leader,” said UTU National Legislative Director James Brunkenhoefer.
