On Saturday, about 35 United Transportation Union-represented workers at Rochester & Southern Railroad Inc. ratified a five-year agreement retroactive to Jan. 1, 2003, and expiring Dec. 31, 2007.

Covering the short line's engineers, conductors, maintenance-of-way employees, signalmen and clerical workers, the pact represents the workers' first new contract in three years.

"It's a very good contract, with annual wage increases, and good health and welfare coverage," said UTU General Chairperson Dave Murphy in a prepared statement.

Owned and operated by Genesee & Wyoming Inc., and part of the short-line holding company's New York/Pennsylvania Region, the 106-mile Rochester & Southern interchanges with CSX Transportation, Norfolk Southern Railway, Canadian National Railway Co. and Canadian Pacific Railway.
