The 1,400 members of United Electrical Workers (UE) Locals 506 and 618 yesterday ratified a new collective bargaining agreement with Wabtec Corp., bringing an end to the 10-week strike at Wabtec’s Erie, Pennsylvania, plant that began June 22.
"This contract represents a substantial improvement over what Wabtec had on the table in June,” said Local 506 President Scott Slawson said in a press release. “We are proud of the resolve of the membership over 70 days on the picket line."
In a statement issued Aug. 30, UE officials said the agreement "provides wage increases, improves the grievance process, improves holidays and personal days for new employees, and transitions the Erie workforce to Wabtec’s standard employee benefits with additional benefits new to the union membership."
Wabtec manufactures locomotives and freight-car components in Erie. Company officials said in a prepared statement that they’re pleased the union members ratified the labor agreement.
"We look forward to having our employees back, working on the innovative technologies that help drive our customers’ success, while also contributing to a cleaner planet. Together, we will continue to deliver on customer commitments," according to the statement.
