Last month, a vast majority of VAE Nortrak North America Inc. employees in Cheyenne, Wyo., ratified the plant’s first-ever collective bargaining agreement. The workers will be represented by the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division (BMWED) of the Teamsters Rail Conference.

In April 2004, the National Labor Relations Board certified the union as the elected representative for the Nortrak plant. After more than a year of negotiations, BMWED and Nortrak officials reached an agreement in May. A ratification vote was conducted June 27 ands 28.

“This [contract] represents the first time the BMWED has organized outside of the Railway Labor Act,” said BMWED President Freddie Simpson in a prepared statement.

Nortrak supplies track and various railway components to North American freight and passenger railroads.
