Rail News: Labor
The Canadian Auto Workers Union (CAW) and VIA Rail Canada Inc. reached a tentative labor agreement on Saturday, avoiding a strike the union had planned to launch at midnight Sunday if the parties failed to negotiate a contract.
CAW leaders are expected to review the agreement today and begin holding ratification meetings shortly thereafter.
The CAW represents 2,600 VIA Rail workers, including on-board service and skilled-trade employees, and ticket agents. The union and railroad have been negotiating a contract since October 2006.
