Alberta Midland Railway Terminal marks progress on rail logistics center

The Alberta Midland Railway Terminal Ltd.'s (AMRT) project to build a rail logistics center in Lamont County is well underway, the company announced earlier this week.

The facility will be located on CN's Prairie North Line between Edmonton and Winnipeg. It is designed to store up to 850 rail cars and is located next to customers in Edmonton who ship liquified petroleum gas, petroleum products and plastics, AMRT officials said in a press release.

Construction on the facility began in August 2016. Despite weather setbacks to the project, company officials are now "very pleased with our progress," said AMRT President and Chief Executive Officer Darcy Heggie.

"Our contractors are finishing civil work and are now laying track, which will allow us to provide our anchor tenant with rail car storage services by summer's end," Heggie said.

Additionally, AMRT will provide storage, transloading services, rail-car repair, switching and project lay-down capability by the end of the third quarter, he said.

The terminal project is a joint partnership between private investors and rail operators that include R.K. Heggie Grain Ltd., Dominion Railway Services Ltd., and Northern Plains Rail Cos., which owns and operates the Northern Plains Railroad.
