Cando Rail Services Ltd. yesterday announced the opening of the Cando Sturgeon Terminal in Sturgeon County, Alberta.

The terminal will provide additional rail capacity to Alberta's Industrial Heartland and expand Cando's rail network, company officials said in a press release.

Cando Sturgeon Terminal is located in the Industrial Heartland and is served by CN. The facility offers rail-car staging and storage services, including unit-train storage capability, for loaded or empty cars.

With the completion of the terminal's first phase, it can store up to 1,900 cars using a loop-track system.

"Now we look forward to providing access to increased transportation and logistics solutions at this key industrial hub of our country," said Brian Cornick, Cando Rail's president and chief executive officer.

CN's strategic partnership with Cando Rail at the terminal will help strengthen the supply chain in a key market, said JJ Ruest, the Class I's president and CEO.

"Collaborative investments in rail infrastructure also increase opportunities for Canadian businesses, promoting economic recovery and growth," he said.

Through the National Trade Corridors Fund, the Canadian government is providing up to CA$15 million for the project. The terminal's official grand opening is scheduled for spring 2021.
