GE Transportation has acquired ShipXpress Inc., a cloud-based software provider, to boost GE's logistics management offerings to railroad and shipper customers.

The acquisition will complement GE's sensing technology platform Predix, enabling the company to offer customers a more advanced, scalable cloud-based solution to improve the movement of goods and information, said said GE Transportation President and Chief Executive Officer Jamie Miller in a press release.

"Our combined capabilities will help short-line railroads better analyze their rail operations, car accounting and supply chain information, and deliver a data-rich path to ongoing performance improvement, asset and operations optimization,"
she said.

The deal also will bring to GE nearly 200 industry, technical and software development experts.

"Through this integration, we will help our customers achieve the promise of real-time collaboration among trading partners, [as well as] greater control, lower costs and operational efficiencies," said Seth Maerowitz, co-CEO and co-founder of ShipXpress.

Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
