On Tuesday, Savage Cos. announced it launched construction on a multi-user, BNSF Railway Co.-served rail terminal in Trenton, N.D., that will handle crude oil produced in the Bakken Shale.

Slated to be operational by second-quarter 2012, the Trenton Railport will be managed by Savage's Railway and Industry Solutions Group, which provides more than 50 rail services and oversees transloading terminals throughout the United States. The terminal’s 270-acre site includes rail infrastructure and space for future oil field material storage and frac sand receiving operations.

“Rail is a great option for transporting crude oil, especially given that production is forecasted to exceed current distribution alternatives,” said Savage Chief Executive Officer Allen Alexander in a prepared statement.

Savage also announced yesterday it entered into an agreement with Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad Co. (IHB) under which Savage will operate a multi-user transload facility owned by the railroad in Franklin Park, Ill. Savage and IHB will jointly market the facility, which is near Chicago O’Hare International Airport and Interstates 294 and 90.

The 10-acre facility, which features 40 active rail-car transloading spots and a 4,000-square-foot warehouse, can handle dry, liquid and break bulk cargo, as well as food grade products and hazardous materials.
