The Greenbrier Cos. recently acquired most of Roller Bearing Industries Inc.'s (RBI) operating assets from SKF USA Inc.

RBI supplies reconditioned wheelset roller bearings to the rail industry. Greenbrier will assume operations of RBI's Elizabethtown, Ky., plant.

The acquisition expands Greenbrier's refurbishment and parts business — which provides wheel replacement, replacement parts and rail-car repair services — to 39 U.S. and Mexican locations.

The deal "enables us to increase our vertical integration in the wheel services business and expand our growing replacement parts business," said Greenbrier Rail Services President Tim Stuckey in a prepared statement, adding that reconditioned bearings are used in about 90 percent of the wheelsets Greenbrier refurbishes at its 12 wheel shops.
