Cando Rail & Terminals yesterday announced it acquired the rail terminal operations of AWP Industries, a rail-car storage and transload terminal in Canada's Northwest Territories.

The new rail terminal supports key existing Cando network customers, as well as Class I partner CN, Cando officials said in a press release. AWP is located at the northern terminus of CN’s rail network and serves as a critical gateway to transport bulk products to support communities, airports, mines and government agencies in the North, they said.

The recently built terminal has substantial capacity for future growth. The acquisition marks Cando's second terminal acquisition in less than a year. A dollar amount for the acquisition was not disclosed in the press release.

“Strategic acquisitions have become a cornerstone of Cando’s multifaceted growth platform,” said Cando President and CEO Brian Cornick. "Cando plans to continue investing organically and inorganically in critical rail infrastructure to support shipper-customers and Class I partners.”

AWP Founder and CEO Brad Mapes has become an employee and shareholder of Cando and will focus on driving volume growth and new customers to the terminal, company officials said.

With this latest acquisition, Cando’s network has the capacity to stage and store more than 11,000 rail cars. The company now owns and operates 13 rail terminals and one short line, in addition to providing rail operations at nearly 50 customer locations.
