Coffey International Ltd. recently acquired railway engineering consulting firm Asia Pacific Rail Pty. Ltd., and project and contract management firm John Wertheimer Consultants Pty. Ltd. for $6.4 million cash and $500,000 in shares. As part of the deal, more than 50 track, signaling, rail infrastructure and project management specialists from the two companies will join Coffey’s staff.

With offices in Melbourne, Australia, and New South Wales, Asia Pacific Rail (which in the near term will continue to operate under its current name) will help Coffey form a new business specializing in rail infrastructure consulting and engineering. Melbourne-based John Wertheimer Consultants will be incorporated into Coffey Projects, a new project management business. Asia Pacific Rail and John Wertheimer Consultants owner John Wertheimer will serve as chief operating officer for the new businesses.

“These acquisitions position us for rapid growth in the booming infrastructure market, particularly in the rail sector, and boost our established project management capability,” said Coffey International Managing Director Roger Olds in a prepared statement.
