Georgia Southwestern Railroad Inc. (GSWR) recently acquired 43 track miles between Hamilton and Greenville, Ga., from Norfolk Southern Corp. subsidiary Central of Georgia Railroad Co. The former “R” line serves several forest product shippers, including a Georgia-Pacific Corp. facility in Durand, Ga.
GSWR’s network now comprises more than 340 track miles in southwest Georgia and eastern Alabama, including lines that are leased or under access agreements. The short line moves about 12,000 carloads of agricultural products, construction materials, chemicals and plastics annually.
“This line acquisition is a good fit to the existing core of our railroad and will enhance our operations by offering other commodity venues,” said GSWR President Terry Small in a prepared statement.
