Central Midland Railway Co. recently filed an exemption notice with the Surface Transportation Board to lease from Missouri Central Railroad Co. and operate 243.8 track miles between Vigus and Pleasant Hill, Mo.

Although headquartered in Indianapolis, the 83-mile Central Midland recently was contracted by Missouri Central owner Ameren Corp. — which provides energy service to 2.2 million customers in Missouri and Illinois — to operate and extend the short line.

Missouri Central originally was part of Union Pacific Railroad's Lackland Subdivision and the old Rock Island Line. Currently, the short line's operating track stretches 42 miles from Vigus to Union, Mo.
