Transportation industry consulting firm Mercer Management Consulting Inc. recently acquired MultiModal Applied Systems Inc., which provides railway systems planning and service design software to the railroad industry. Terms weren’t disclosed.

Founded in 1992, MultiModal Applied Systems offers MultiRail® software designed to help manage freight and passenger railway operations. The company also develops customized software, and provides products and services aimed at operating plan design, line capacity planning, railway merger and privatization analysis, real-time marshalling plan management, crew and locomotive optimization, and yield management.

“Mercer is a good fit for us because it provides a truly global reach, a strong brand across the industry, an opportunity to accelerate the expansion of our work around the world and the resources to address emerging issues in the transport sector,” said MultiModal Applied Systems founder and President Carl Van Dyke in a prepared statement.

MultiModal Applied Systems’ customers include all the North American Class Is.

“With network capacity management a critical issue for senior rail executives, we believe that MultiModal’s rigorous, operations research-based solutions will complement Mercer’s expertise in strategy development and performance improvement,” said Allan Kaulbach, a Mercer director who heads the firm’s global operations.
