North American short-line operator Regional Rail LLC has agreed to acquire Agracel Rail Holdings' three railroads: Effingham Railroad Co., Illinois Western Railroad Co. and South Point & Ohio Railroad.

The short lines serve industrial customers across a variety of markets, including chemicals, aggregates and lumber. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

In October, Regional Rail also began freight-rail operations at the Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor via its new Burns Harbor Railroad LLC subsidiary, its first operation in the Midwest.

"We are excited to partner with the existing teams [at the three short lines] to grow our operations in the Midwest, and look forward to building on the companies’ track records of providing a high-quality service to their customers," said Regional Rail President and CEO Al Sauer in a press release.

Since partnering in July 2019, private equity firm 3i Group and Regional Rail will have more than tripled the number of railroads under Regional Rail’s control, growing to 13 freight-rail operations across North America.
