Vermont Rail System (VRS) announced this week it has entered into an agreement with New Hampshire Central Railroad to purchase certain assets and operating rights in connection with freight-rail operations in northern New Hampshire.
The acquisition is pending until it receives state and federal regulatory approvals, according to a VRS press release. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
The New Hampshire Central Railroad operates on track leased from the state of New Hampshire between North Stratford and Colebrook, and Groveton and Littleton. The railroad will continue to be known as the New Hampshire Central Railroad.
"VRS has a 60-year tradition of helping local businesses with efficient and reliable freight service, and we are excited at the opportunity to grow and expand by providing economical rail service to customers in northern New Hampshire," said VRS President Selden Houghton.
Based in Burlington, Vermont, VRS operates 400 miles of track in Vermont, New Hampshire and New York, handling general freight and passenger excursions, as well as hosting Amtrak trains. The company currently owns and operates six short lines: the Clarendon and Pittsford Railroad; Green Mountain Railroad; New England Southern Railroad; New York and Ogdensburg Railway; Vermont Railway; and Washington County Railroad.
