The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently certified that MTU Detroit Diesel Inc.’s new 12V4000 R33 engine meets Tier 2 emission standards — the first time the agency certified a high-speed locomotive engine, according to the company.

The new Series 4000, 2,250-horsepower engine features the latest fuel injection and turbocharge systems, and Advanced Diesel Engine Controls electronics.

“Certifying the engine itself, instead of the locomotive as a whole, provides OEMs and operators the flexibility to use this engine in any locomotive application, whether for re-powers or new construction,” said MTU Detroit Diesel Rail Sales Manager Doug Berry in a prepared statement.

The company adapted the engine for the rail market by adding water-cooled exhaust and turbochargers, employing a second-generation common rail fuel injection system and self-cleaning oil filtration system, and designing reversible turbochargers and exhaust outlets.

MTU Detroit Diesel provides diesel engines and drive and propulsion systems for the rail, marine, power generation, oil and gas, agriculture, mining, construction, industrial and defense markets.
